Intrinsic & Extrinsic

It is somewhat readily apparent what the intrinsic value of photography art is.  Mediums such as fine paper, metals, and acrylics, combined with the size and framing can elevate the inherent value of photography art.  In judging value, the subject and place of the composition along with how they are presented in the photo make up the core worth of the art.  Colors and composition, light display, and the type of subject model more value (or possibly less) to the artwork, and at some point we may all come to a general consensus of a shared valuation for the art.

Unseen, and mostly unfelt, is the extrinsic value that only the photographer knows.  

• The hours spent waiting for the light to hit just right or for clouds to form between the mountains while a cold-front presses in;
• The sweat of heart-pounding labor, hiking past 13,000ft for several hours, then suffering cold that hits to the bones;
• Waking up in the middle of the night and stepping out into -2 degrees from the tent to attempt capturing the milky way – frozen hands unable to feel the tripod controls or the camera buttons;
• Enduring two weeks of steady rain that cause flash-flooding;
• Remaining motionless in the prone position to capture the countenance of an animal that happens to be one of thirty left;
• Searching out those thirty;
• Devoting hours to searching, trekking, suffering, editing…only to not attain the shot.  

These things are the extrinsic factors that photographers feel to the core and know shape the value of the art they have.  This is often translated into the pricing unbeknownst to the collector who may wonder why some artwork is worth more than others.  From the eye, it may be somewhat apparent, but the story behind it which gives extrinsic value to the work can be silent, unknown.

In the works offered on this site, I do my best to share some of the extrinsic factors that contribute along with the intrinsic.  

Story & Statement

I’ve heard so many photographers lecturing on the importance of never just taking a photo of something, but taking a photo to tell a story – almost ad nauseam.  Not all artwork tells a story to me.  Often there are moments that say just one thing or give one feeling in the space and place where I may be capturing the photo.  Photography art does not need to always tell a story.  Sometimes it can just make a statement.

Some of the pieces I capture even serve best as reminders.  They remind me that I once was there and experienced that moment, or that such places exist outside of the bubble we create and subject our lives to be relegated to.  My hope is that you find some of these pieces to inspire you and bring some happiness in knowing that these places really exist out there.  And if they don’t tell a story for you, let them just be a statement.

For the best aluminum printing, I recommend contacting me directly.  I prefer to fulfill those through Shiny Prints which uses a “slower/lower” process for their aluminum printing – baking the art for a longer period of time at a lower temperature.  This ensures the best melding that is the most durable and resistant to chipping.  The aluminum sheet print also comes with an aluminum floating mount installed.

Limited Editions & NFT’s

Limited edition prints will be signed and numbered.  If there is any additional request (such as writing a message on the back), please add that in the notes when checking out.

NFT artwork is an option.  In the case of the art shown online, NFT’s will not be offered unless specifically stated on its product page.  If you see a subject series or style you are interested in as an NFT, contact me directly as I will likely have similar photos offline or not printed that can be directed into artwork pieces and minted for you.
